The following color key should be used to translate the various colors into the age of the moon.
White = 0 to 15 hours old
Yellow = 15 to 20 hours old
Purple = 20 to 25 hours old
Red = 25 to 30 hours old
Lt. Blue = 30 to 35 hours old
Green = 35 to 40 hours old
Dk. Blue = 40 to 45 hours old
Grey = 45 to 50 hours old
It should be noted that it is extremely difficult to see a visible new moon with the naked eye when it is less than 20 hours old.
